Coffee Appreciation Workshop

We were delighted to welcome our Sunway Alumni back to campus for a Coffee Appreciation Workshop, where they explored the art of coffee-making through a hands-on experience. The session was led by Sunway alumna Shireen Tan, and Javier Ferreri from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, both of whom are SCA-certified coffee roasters and baristas.
The morning began at Raiz Dining, Sunway University, where participants enjoyed complimentary coffee and networked with fellow alumni before the workshop commenced. Shireen then introduced the fundamentals of coffee, tracing its journey from coffee cherry to cup.

Next, participants headed to the kitchen for a briefing and demonstration on coffee roasting, where Shireen shared practical tips and techniques. Our alumni then paired up to put what they had learnt into practice, with guidance from Shireen and the student helpers. The best part? Everyone got to take home their freshly roasted coffee beans to brew and enjoy.

With the roasting session complete, Javier introduced participants to coffee brewing techniques and flavour profiles. He demonstrated how to brew coffee using the V60 and French press methods before participants paired up again to try both techniques themselves with the equipment provided. Javier then guided everyone through a side-by-side tasting, exploring the differences in flavour between the two brewing methods. Light refreshments were also served to complement the freshly brewed coffee.

To round off the morning, Shireen surprised everyone with a nitro coffee demonstration, giving participants who had never tried it before the chance to discover something new and watch how it was prepared. What a delightful way to end the workshop!
A big thank you to Shireen and Javier for sharing their knowledge and passion for coffee, from roasting to brewing the perfect cup. We hope our alumni had a wonderful time reconnecting and learning new skills back on campus!
