Journey from Sunway University to a Global Hospitality Career
When I first stepped into Sunway University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism, I was filled with curiosity and excitement. I’ve always loved meeting people, learning about different cultures, and travelling, so enrolling in the Diploma in Hotel Management just felt right. Little did I know that the decision would lead me on an incredible journey across continents and oceans.
Sunway gave me more than just academic knowledge, it gave me confidence. The combination of practical and tutorial sessions helped shape my character and taught me how to lead, solve problems, and serve with heart. I wasn’t just trained for hotel work; I was introduced to the wider world of cruises and events too. The skills I picked up in customer service, communication, and intercultural understanding became the foundation of my career.
After graduating, I found myself working with world-renowned names like AmaWaterways River Cruises, Princess Cruise Line, Genting Dream Cruise Line, Genting SkyWorlds Hotels, Silversea Cruise Line, and Costa Cruise Line. Being part of these teams wasn’t just about ticking boxes on my CV, it was the fulfilment of a dream. I’ve worked in guest relations, tackled operational challenges, and grown through every role I took on.
One of my greatest assets has been my ability to speak Spanish, Italian, French, and German. Being able to greet guests in their own language made every interaction more meaningful. It built trust and often turned simple moments into unforgettable ones. More than just words, it showed respect for different cultures, which is a quality I believe is essential in this industry.
Working on cruise ships also meant meeting strict international standards. I’m proud to hold certifications like the STCW (Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) and valid International Seaman’s Books, Bahamas Seaman’s Book, which have allowed me to travel and work globally. Life at sea isn’t always easy, as it comes with long hours, cultural adjustments, and being far from home. But, it has also been deeply rewarding. I’ve become more resilient, open-minded, and resourceful.
Over the years, I’ve learnt to be strategic with my career moves. Before accepting any job, I ask myself whether it aligns with my long-term goals. Understanding company policies and career development opportunities is just as important, it helps ensure I’m growing in the right direction.
To students and young professionals, my advice is simple: Find out what motivates you and what kind of work excites you. Hospitality is a broad field, you can work in hotels, events, airlines, cruise ships, and so much more. But you need to have clarity in your own goals. Once you find what you love, stick to it, and keep growing. This industry requires passion, patience, and professionalism. There will be challenges, but those challenges are what help you grow. Be humble, keep learning, and never stop improving yourself.
I’m proud to be a Sunway alumna. The solid foundation I received at Sunway continues to carry me forward. And as I look ahead, I hope my story encourages others to dream big, work hard, and embrace the world with open arms.
