A Journey of Growth, Friendship, and Purpose
Meet Mariyam Zaina Siraj, an international student from the Maldives and a recent graduate of the Diploma in Nursing programme at Sunway University. While she had previously visited Malaysia on holiday, her experience as a student proved to be profoundly different and deeply enriching.
“My journey at Sunway has been nothing short of amazing,” says Mariyam. “From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with warmth and kindness, which made adapting to a new environment so much easier.” She describes the Sunway campus as vibrant and full of energy, providing the perfect setting to immerse herself in the full spectrum of university life.
A standout aspect of her academic experience was the practical training offered through the nursing programme. “I’m incredibly grateful for the hands-on exposure I gained during my clinical postings in public and private hospitals,” she shares. Rotations across various specialties allowed her to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings - an opportunity she found invaluable for building both skills and confidence.
Beyond academics, Mariyam attributes much of her personal growth to the unwavering support of her lecturers and peers. “I was guided by experienced and encouraging lecturers who constantly motivated me to push forward. And I was lucky to make lifelong friends who stood by me through late-night study sessions and joyful adventures,” she recalls fondly. Her adaptation to a new culture, language, and local cuisine was made all the more enjoyable by the outings and shared experiences with her friends.
Not one to limit herself to the classroom, Mariyam joined the university basketball team, adding another layer of fulfillment to her time at Sunway. “Being part of the team helped me stay active, form new friendships, and take part in exciting competitions,” she says.
As she reflects on her journey, Mariyam expresses deep gratitude for the experiences that shaped her. “I will forever cherish the memories and friendships I’ve made at Sunway. They’ve helped shape my career and the person I’ve become today.”
