A Proud Sunway Alumna’s Journey of Excellence in Nursing
Meet Subahshini Selvaraju, a dedicated nursing professional whose journey reflects perseverance, lifelong learning, and a deep commitment to clinical excellence. A wife and mother of one, Subahshini was recently recognised as one of the Excellent Students, a meaningful honour that acknowledges her dedication to professional growth and specialised nursing practice.
Her nursing journey began in 2012 with the completion of a Graduate Diploma in Nursing. This foundational training equipped her with essential clinical knowledge, professional values, and a disciplined, patient-centred approach to care that continues to guide her practice today.
Driven by a strong belief in the importance of specialisation, Subahshini pursued Post Basic Perioperative Nursing at Sunway University, completing the programme in 2023. The specialised training strengthened her expertise in operating theatre practices, patient safety, infection control, and advanced surgical care, while enhancing her ability to perform effectively in high-pressure clinical environments. It was also during this time that her passion for perioperative and interventional nursing was further solidified.
Subahshini began her professional career at Island Hospital, where she served as a scrub nurse in the Operating Theatre for four years. There, she gained extensive hands-on experience across a wide range of surgical procedures and developed a strong appreciation for teamwork, precision, and accountability in surgical care.
In 2016, she took a significant step forward by advancing her career internationally, joining Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore as a Senior Scrub Nurse in the Cath Lab Department. The role provided valuable exposure to interventional cardiology procedures, high-acuity patient care, and international healthcare standards, marking an important milestone in her professional journey.
She later joined Sunway Medical Centre Penang, where she continued her work as a scrub nurse and assumed responsibility for the Da Vinci Xi Robotic System. Her dedication and leadership capabilities led to progressive career advancement, including promotions to Senior Staff Nurse, Second Liner, and subsequently Deputy Nurse Manager in the Operating Theatre. To further broaden her experience, she later transitioned to the Cath Lab Department, where she currently serves as Deputy Nurse Manager, overseeing complex cardiac cases while supporting clinical operations and staff development.
Looking ahead, Subahshini aspires to continue growing as a specialised nurse leader, contributing to high-quality, patient-centred care. She hopes to further strengthen her expertise in cardiac and perioperative nursing, mentor junior nurses, and uphold the values of excellence, innovation, and compassion, which are the values shaped and reinforced during her time at Sunway.
