A Journey of Service, Growth, and Purpose
Elaine Tan Hwa Yoke, a graduate of Sunway University’s Diploma in Nursing (Class of 2020), reflects dedication, resilience, and a strong commitment to patient-centred care.
Elaine completed six intensive semesters while maintaining a CGPA of 3.5 and above, mastering both theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies. Beyond academics, she actively served with the Malaysian Red Crescent, participating in mobile clinics that provided free health screenings and consultations to refugees and underserved communities. Her involvement also extended to community vaccination programmes, CPR awareness initiatives, and high-pressure MERS 999 ambulance duties; experiences that strengthened her confidence, adaptability, and ability to perform under pressure.
Following graduation, Elaine began her nursing career at Sunway Medical Centre (Sunway City) in the Medical-Surgical ward, where she transformed from a novice nurse into a confident healthcare professional. She currently serves as an Intermediate Nurse at Sunway Medical Centre (Damansara), contributing to the establishment of high standards of care at the newly opened facility.
Elaine has since developed a passion for geriatric nursing, finding fulfilment in building meaningful relationships with elderly patients and supporting them throughout their recovery journeys. She is also deeply committed to perioperative patient education, helping patients feel informed, reassured, and confident before and after surgery. These moments of connection and trust are the most rewarding aspects of her role.
Looking ahead, Elaine plans to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and obtain Post-Basic certifications in Gerontology or Wound Care. She is also exploring a future in Nursing Education, with hopes of mentoring and inspiring future nurses, just as she was supported by her lecturers at Sunway. Elaine’s journey stands as a proud example of how a strong Sunway foundation continues to shape compassionate professionals who serve with purpose and excellence.
