My name is Deshnee Sunnassee, and I am from Mauritius, where I currently work as a Sales Coordinator Groups and Events at Sofitel Mauritius L’Imperial Resort and Spa. I have always loved travelling, discovering new places, and meeting people, so hospitality felt like the perfect match for the person I am today.

I pursued my Bachelor of Science Honours in International Hospitality Management at Sunway University, followed by my master’s degree in the same field. My passion for creating meaningful guest experiences and working closely with people inspired me to choose this programme. One of the biggest highlights of my academic journey was graduating with first class honours and being awarded a scholarship to continue my master’s at Sunway, something I remain incredibly proud of. It was a moment that reflected both my hard work and the support I received throughout my studies.
Studying at Sunway was a memorable chapter of my life academically and personally. Moving to Malaysia alone as an international student was a huge step, and adapting to a new country taught me independence and resilience. The campus atmosphere was always warm and welcoming, and I appreciated how supportive the lecturers were. Some of my fondest memories include late night meals at Rock Cafe, drinking teh tarik at 3 a.m., exploring new foods with friends, and studying together during exam season. These moments made Sunway feel like my second home.
My time at university helped build the foundation for my current role. Through presentations, group work, and practical assignments, I became more confident, adaptable, and comfortable working under pressure, qualities that are essential in events and hospitality.
I have now been with Sofitel for nearly three years, where I coordinate group bookings, conferences, corporate dinners, weddings, and special events. My role requires detailed planning, coordinating with multiple departments, and ensuring that everything aligns with clients’ expectations. What I enjoy most is seeing months of preparation come together on the actual event day. The energy, teamwork, and final outcome always give me a sense of accomplishment.
Since graduating, I am proud of the professional growth I have achieved through the wide range of events I have managed over the years. Each project has strengthened my confidence, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Becoming more independent and building my career through hard work, supported by my family and friends, is something I truly cherish.
Many of my Sunway friends and lecturers remain an important part of my life. Even though we’re now in different countries, we still support one another, celebrate milestones, and share our career journeys. Being part of the Sunway Alumni community truly feels like belonging to a global family. It reminds me of where I started, how much I’ve grown, and the people who helped shape my path. I hope to see the alumni network continue expanding with more collaborations, mentorship programmes, and worldwide gatherings that keep Sunway graduates connected no matter where they are. This sense of unity and excellence is exactly why Sunway is truly a class above!
