Arjun Thanaraju’s Full-Circle Journey at Sunway

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Arjun Thanaraju, a double graduate of Sunway University, having completed both his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biology with Psychology and his PhD in Biology. Arjun has now returned to Sunway University as a Lecturer at the Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences, eager to inspire the next generation of change makers.

Arjun’s PhD research explored how socioeconomic status across the lifespan influences how the brain ages and the consequences of this on later-life cognitive and mental health. His interdisciplinary work highlights the deep connections between social inequality and long-term health outcomes, offering insights that are relevant to both science and policy.

His current research sits at the intersection of health and the creative arts. Using performance and storytelling as innovative tools, Arjun leads projects that explore and address complex health-related issues, particularly those faced by vulnerable and marginalised communities. Arjun is also an award-winning film and theatre maker who advocates for minority rights and spotlights underrepresented stories in Malaysia.

“Sunway has shaped me at every stage of my journey - as a student, researcher, and now as a lecturer. I’m especially grateful to the mentors who believed in me and showed me what it means to teach with heart. It’s incredibly meaningful to now call them my colleagues,” Arjun shared as he reflected on his journey.
