At Sunway, I learned how to work with people from different cultures, communicate confidently in English, take ownership in difficult situations, and stay curious. Those experiences became the foundation of my career.

When the opportunity came to give back as an alumni mentor and community donor, it felt like a meaningful way to contribute to the next generation of Sunway students.

During my recent visit, it was especially rewarding to return to the classroom and speak with current students. I wanted to share my journey as someone who once sat where they are today, trying to understand where life and career might lead.

Giving back is my way of honouring the people who once believed in me before I believed in myself.

Subahshini pursued Post Basic Perioperative Nursing at Sunway University, completing the programme in 2023. The specialised training strengthened her expertise in operating theatre practices, patient safety, infection control, and advanced surgical care, while enhancing her ability to perform effectively in high-pressure clinical environments.

Supporting the JCF Community Scholarship was a natural decision. I know how life-changing education can be when access meets opportunity. I have seen how a little support can help someone dream bigger, rise higher, and eventually pay it forward.

Leadership experiences during my time at Sunway were defining chapters of my growth. While on campus, leading the marketing team and heading the events department for my projects meant that I was not just participating but carrying responsibility.

My decision to pursue a Diploma in Hotel Management was driven by my passion for travel, exploring different cultures, and the dynamic nature of the tourism industry. While the programme may have appeared hospitality-specific, it actually provided a strong foundation in essential business subjects such as marketing, finance, human resources, and operations.

Elaine completed six intensive semesters while maintaining a CGPA of 3.5 and above, mastering both theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies. Beyond academics, she actively served with the Malaysian Red Crescent, participating in mobile clinics that provided free health screenings and consultations to refugees and underserved communities.

Under Dr Z’s guidance, our cohort was encouraged to be bold, take on challenges head-on, and celebrate our creative instincts. We were encouraged to compete on industry platforms such as The Kancil Awards 2024, where we reached the finals, and the MDA d Awards 2025, where we secured second place.

The diversity and warmth of the Sunway community left a lasting impact on me. Being surrounded by people from different cultures in such a welcoming environment helped broaden my perspective and build meaningful connections.

Giving back and participating in various activities has allowed me to expand my network, strengthen my leadership skills, stay grounded, and find a deeper sense of purpose.

Beyond the office, the principles I learned during my time at Sunway continue to shape my contributions to society. I actively support youth mentorship programmes and contribute to charity initiatives in Yangon, firmly believing in the importance of giving back and lifting others as we rise.

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Arjun Thanaraju, a double graduate of Sunway University, having completed both his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biology with Psychology and his PhD in Biology. Arjun has now returned to Sunway University as a Lecturer at the Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences, eager to inspire the next generation of change makers.

Just as I was challenged as a Sunway student to think outside the box, I was pushed to do the same personally and professionally during my time as a radio host. While I had to adjust to the fact that it was my first job and I was the youngest member on the MIX team, I was also blessed to be working with people who have decades of experience in media, who thankfully were generous in sharing their expertise with me!

Aliah’s journey at Sunway University is one of resilience, passion, and self-discovery, as she transformed her love for mathematics into a fulfilling career.

On my very first day, I was nervous, a slum kid stepping into a polished academic environment, until I met my supervisor, Associate Professor Stephen T. Homer. His warmth and respect put me at ease, and within that first two-hour conversation, I began to understand what Sunway truly stands for: kindness, openness, and genuine support.

In 2020, Ying Hui was awarded the Sunway University Art and Design scholarship and began her studies with financial aid. She is personally proud of receiving the talent-based scholarship, as it helped her study without placing any financial burden on her parents. The scholarship motivated her to perform better in her studies and carefully grow her skills.
